How to Pack and Ship Used Cell Phones: A Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you’re sending in a single phone or a batch of devices, properly packaging and shipping your phones is key to ensuring they arrive safely. While mailing a cell phone is generally straightforward, each major shipping carrier has specific guidelines worth noting. This guide will walk you through how to securely pack and ship used cell phones using FedEx, UPS, or USPS.

1. Choose the Right Packaging

a) For one or two phones: Use a durable padded mailer or small sturdy box. This offers sufficient cushioning and protection for small shipments. Ensure the envelope or package is strong enough to handle transit without tearing.

b) For larger shipments: Use a sturdy, rigid box. Select a box that fits the devices snugly and allows for padding on all sides to prevent shifting during transport.

2. Pack Devices Securely

  • Wrap each phone in bubble wrap individually. Secure the wrap with tape to ensure the phone is fully cushioned.
  • Fill extra space in the box with packing peanuts, air pillows, or crumpled newspaper to prevent movement inside the box.
  • Seal the box thoroughly with packing tape.

This helps minimize the chance of damage during shipping.

3. Pick Your Shipping Carrier

FedEx

  • Best for: Fast delivery and detailed tracking
  • Starting cost: Around $15 with FedEx Ground
  • Overnight shipping: Available but more expensive (upwards of $50)
  • Perks: Reliable tracking, Saturday delivery included, professional packing assistance available

UPS

  • Best for: Reliability and security
  • Starting cost: Around $10 with UPS Ground
  • Delivery time: About 5 business days
  • Perks: Strong tracking system, packaging services available

USPS

  • Best for: Cost-effective shipping
  • Recommended service: USPS Ground Advantage (starts at $5.25)
  • Important: As of July 9, 2023, USPS classifies used cell phones as hazardous materials. When printing a label, answer “YES” to the dangerous goods prompt and choose:
    • Class 9 – lithium battery – returns package – used electronic devices containing or packaged with lithium batteries
  • Do not use: Priority Mail or Priority Mail boxes for cell phones

USPS can be slightly slower and more variable in delivery times, ranging from days to weeks.

4. Add a Surface Transportation Only Label

This label helps ensure compliance with hazmat shipping rules and should be placed clearly on the package. If you can’t print one, ask for help at your local post office, UPS Store, or FedEx location. Click here for a Surface Transportation Only Label and Address Label

5. Buy Postage and Ship

Weigh your entire package (including packing materials) accurately—most kitchen scales will do the job. Round up to the nearest ounce to ensure correct postage.

Attach all required labels, including:

  • Shipping label
  • Surface transportation only label
  • Return address

You can schedule a free pickup (for USPS) or drop off your package at any local FedEx, UPS, or USPS location.

Shipping Tips

  • Batteries: Do not remove the battery. It must remain in the phone to avoid terminal exposure. Never ship damaged or loose batteries.
  • iPhones: Turn off Find My iPhone before shipping. This ensures the phone can be erased and reused.
  • Android devices: Remove your Google and Samsung accounts. This allows the device to be reset and recycled easily.
