Meet the Rescue Recycle Family

Behind Rescue Recycle is a house full of animals, each with a story of their own. Some have been with us for years, some arrived unexpectedly, and a few started out as temporary fosters before becoming permanent members of the family.

Our commitment to animal welfare is deeply personal, and many of the faces below are part of the reason why.
Household Supervisor

Cobain

Cobain is our oldest son and has been with us for nearly a decade. At nine years old, he’s earned the title of household supervisor and can usually be found keeping an eye on everyone else’s business.
While the younger animals may create the chaos, Cobain prefers a comfortable spot where he can supervise everyone’s activities and quietly judge their decisions.
The Gentle Giant

Valkyrie

Valkyrie is our gentle giant and the heart of our home. Despite her intimidating size, she’s incredibly loyal, gentle, affectionate, and happiest when she’s with her people.
She keeps a close eye on her family and prefers not to let them wander too far without her supervision. She reminds us every day that some of the biggest dogs have the softest hearts.
The Marina Rescue

Vito

Vito joined our family after spending much of his time hanging around a local marina where he had become a familiar face. When the opportunity came to give him a permanent home, we didn’t hesitate.
Today, Vito is one of the most loving and energetic dogs you’ll ever meet. He has endless energy during the day but transforms into a professional cuddle expert at night. His favorite place to sleep is under the covers, usually while being spooned.

The Boys

A foster story, by Stoncia.
In the summer of 2025, while picking up lunch at a local restaurant, I noticed a stray mother cat and her kittens living underneath the building.

After speaking with several employees, I learned that the mother cat had already raised multiple litters and that finding homes for the kittens was an ongoing challenge...
These three boys were originally listed for adoption. Instead, they became family.

The Three Brothers

Nixon

“Nixie”
Nixie was the runt of the litter and is still the smallest of the three brothers. He has a gentle, sweet personality and loves finding the softest, coziest place in the house to nap. More often than not, you’ll find him curled up nearby, perfectly content just being close to his family.

Romeo

“Rome” · formerly known as Rebel
Rome is the lover of the group. He’s affectionate, incredibly smart, and always wants to know what everyone is doing. Unlike most cats, loud noises don’t seem to bother him much at all. His calm, confident personality and love of attention mean he’s usually right in the middle of whatever is going on.

Bowie

"Bo"
Bowie is the largest of the three brothers. With his distinctive black “lipstick” markings, he’s hard to miss. Independent and confident, he likes doing things his own way, but call his name and he’ll come running. While he often acts like he’s too busy for everyone else, he’s also the most vocal of the group and makes sure his opinions are heard.
... My hope was to help the entire family. I wanted to get the mother cat spayed so she wouldn’t continue having kittens and help the kittens find safe, loving homes. While we were able to take in three of her kittens, we were not able to obtain permission to help the mother cat.

It was disappointing, but it reinforced our belief that reducing the number of homeless animals requires both spay and neuter programs and greater awareness of the role responsible pet ownership plays in preventing unwanted litters.
The three kittens came home with us as temporary fosters while we worked to get them healthy and prepare them for adoption. The original plan was simple: foster them, get them healthy, and find them loving homes. When they first came home, the boys were dealing with eye infections and needed a little extra care and patience. Four months later, they were still here.
While the boys ultimately became permanent members of our family, we have a tremendous amount of respect for the people who foster animals and help them find loving homes. Fosters play an important role in animal welfare, providing animals with safety, care, and a chance at a better future.
Somewhere between vet visits, playtime, naps on the couch, and becoming part of our daily lives, Bowie, Romeo, and Nixon stopped feeling like foster kittens and started feeling like family. What began as a temporary foster project became three permanent members of the Rescue Recycle family.
Their story is one of the reasons animal welfare is important to us. Sadly, stories like this are not uncommon. Countless kittens are born every year because cats are left unspayed and unneutered, allowing the cycle to continue generation after generation. We weren’t able to help the mother cat, but her kittens changed our lives. We hope sharing their story encourages others to consider the importance of spaying and neutering, one of the most effective ways to reduce homeless pet populations and give animals a better chance at healthy, safe lives.
