Electronics Recycling in Mississippi: What to Do With Your Old Handheld Devices

What happens to your old phone when you upgrade? For many people, it ends up in a drawer alongside forgotten chargers, outdated tablets, and electronics that haven’t been turned on in years.

While holding onto old devices might seem harmless, those electronics contain materials that could be reused or recovered instead of going to waste.

For Mississippi residents, finding a convenient recycling option isn’t always straightforward. Collection services vary between communities, and not every recycling center accepts smaller electronics.

Fortunately, there are several ways to recycle or donate unwanted devices, including mail-in electronics recycling programs that serve residents throughout Mississippi.

Why Old Electronics Deserve a Second Chance

Smartphones, tablets, and other portable electronics contain valuable materials such as copper, aluminum, and other metals. Manufacturing new devices requires resources, energy, and raw materials.

When electronics are discarded improperly, certain components can also create environmental concerns.

But recycling isn’t always the only solution.

A phone that’s outdated for one person may still be useful to someone else. Even damaged devices can contain reusable components.

Extending the life of electronics through refurbishment helps reduce waste and makes better use of resources that have already been consumed.

Finding Electronics Recycling Options in Mississippi

Mississippi offers electronics recycling opportunities through local governments, private recycling companies, and community collection events.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) maintains an Electronic Waste Program that helps residents and organizations understand responsible disposal practices.

However, available services depend on where you live.

For example:

  • Jackson: The city’s household hazardous waste collection program accepts certain electronics, including computers and cell phones, from eligible residents.
  • DeSoto County: Residents have access to designated electronic waste drop-off locations in communities including Hernando, Olive Branch, and Nesbit.
  • Other Mississippi communities: County recycling programs, participating retailers, and occasional collection events may provide additional options.

Before visiting a recycling facility, confirm its accepted items, hours, fees, and residency requirements.

You can explore additional resources through the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality’s Electronic Waste Program.

What If You Don’t Have a Recycling Center Nearby?

Not everyone lives close to a recycling facility that accepts old phones and tablets.

For residents in smaller communities, making a long drive to dispose of just a few electronics may not be practical.

That’s where mail-in recycling can help.

Rescue Recycle offers a nationwide mail-in electronics donation program, giving Mississippi residents an alternative to local drop-off locations.

Whether you’re in Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Tupelo, Biloxi, or a rural community, qualifying electronics can be shipped directly to our facility.

Our program accepts a variety of handheld devices, including:

  • Cell phones and smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Smartwatches
  • Digital cameras
  • MP3 players
  • Handheld gaming devices
  • Other qualifying small electronics

Devices don’t have to be new or fully functional. We accept many older, damaged, and nonworking electronics, including activation-locked Apple devices.

What Happens After You Donate Your Devices?

Before sending unwanted electronics for material recycling, it’s worth considering whether they can be refurbished and reused.

At Rescue Recycle, we evaluate donated electronics to determine whether refurbishment is possible.

Usable devices may be restored and resold, extending their lifespan rather than immediately breaking them down for materials.

Electronics that cannot be refurbished are sent to an R2-certified downstream recycling facility for responsible handling and processing.

Data security is also an important part of our process. Devices that cannot be securely erased are not resold and are instead directed for destruction through our downstream recycling process.

This approach allows us to prioritize reuse while responsibly handling devices that have reached the end of their useful lives.

Small Donations Can Make a Bigger Difference

An old smartphone might not seem particularly valuable, especially if it hasn’t worked in years.

But when unwanted electronics are collected, refurbished, or responsibly recycled, their combined impact can be meaningful.

At Rescue Recycle, that impact extends beyond electronic waste.

A portion of our profits supports animal welfare organizations, helping shelters and rescue groups care for animals in need.

By donating your unused electronics, you’re supporting a program focused on reducing waste while giving back to animals that need help.

Before You Recycle: A Few Simple Steps

Before donating or recycling an old device, take a few minutes to prepare it.

  • Back up important information. Save any photos, contacts, or files you want to keep.
  • Remove personal accounts. Sign out of connected accounts whenever possible.
  • Perform a factory reset. Erase personal information if the device is functional.
  • Check shipping requirements. Devices containing lithium batteries require appropriate packaging and must comply with applicable shipping restrictions.

If your device is broken or activation-locked, don’t assume it can’t be donated. Contact the recycling program to confirm eligibility.

Give Your Old Electronics a New Purpose in Mississippi

Whether you’re cleaning out a drawer in Jackson, upgrading your phone in Hattiesburg, or sorting through electronics in a smaller Mississippi community, your unwanted devices may still have value.

Local recycling facilities are worth exploring, but mail-in donation programs offer another convenient option for eligible handheld electronics.

Instead of letting old devices collect dust, consider giving them a second chance.
